What is Website Hosting?
Dec 7, 2011

Building a website can be a daunting task. Finding a designer is a step in the right direction, but you’ll also need these two things:
– A domain name
– Website hosting
A domain name is the name of your site. It’s the part you type into the address bar of your browser. Our domain name is “designbymocha.com”. These are cheap, and can be bought for about $10/ year through a Domain Name Registrar (such as Namecheap.com).
Website Hosting is the second thing you need. Hosting is essentially hard-drive space that is always online. It’s like renting a space for your online files. Without hosting, there is no place (or server) to hold your website. Before you go out and buy some hosting, we’d suggest talking to your designer first.
A good analogy to help understand the relationship between your domain name and your web hosting would be to think of cellphone service. You have a phone number (equivalent to your domain name) and then you also have a service provider who enables to you to make and receive calls on that phone number (equivalent the web hosting providing the website files to your visitor). In the same way that you could cancel service with one phone service provider and keep your phone number to move to a different provider you can choose from many different companies to host the files for your website.
The specs for which hosting package you need will vary from project to project. Since hosting is a bit more expensive than a domain name, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re getting something that will meet your needs. Also, some hosts will come highly recommended, and others (although well-known) are less than spectacular. At Design by Mocha, We offer reliable eco-friendly hosting to our clients.
We hope this post helps you understand the some of the behind the scenes work that goes into building a website. If you have any questions we would be more than happy to answer them in the comments below.
